Orvel A. Criqui collection, circa 1862 - 1994.

Research materials of Orvel A. Criqui and, before him, Colonel Ray G. Sparks. The materials focus on such topics as Forsyth's Scouts and the Battle of Beecher Island in Yuma County, Colorado; George Custer; Butterfield Overland Dispatch (B.O.D.); and various aspects of life on the western American frontier in the 19th century, including Native American tribes and individuals, forts and railroads, U.S. military and its operations, etc. Records consist of microfilmed and photocopied primary source documents (very few original documents are in the collection), correspondence, publications and articles of interest, newspaper clippings, photographs and drawings, maps, and other materials documenting both Criqui's and Sparks' research interests. The majority of the research appears to have been conducted during the 1950s-1970s. The folders are color coded topically by such topics as individuals in Forsyth's Scouts; Native Americans; People; Places, etc. A basic folder listing for most of the collection is available upon request.
